Handing the envelope back felt like the smallest apology against a mountain of harm. We talked until the house no longer felt haunted, until “my rules” became “our plans.” She stayed. The note lives in my drawer, a reminder that the hardest grown-up lesson is admitting you were the one who needed to change.
