D.C. Just Sued Trump in a Stunning Legal Showdown—Here’s Why

In an explosive move, Washington, D.C. officials filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration to block what they call an unprecedented federal takeover of the city’s police force.

Using a rarely invoked clause in the Home Rule Act, Trump declared an emergency and moved to take control of the Metropolitan Police Department—appointing a DEA head as the “emergency police commissioner” and deploying federal agents across the city.

But D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb pushed back in court, calling Trump’s action a “brazenly unlawful” assault on the city’s autonomy and self-governance. They’re asking the judge to issue an emergency restraining order to halt the takeover.

The lawsuit isn’t just legal—it’s also political. Law enforcement officials warned it could “wreak operational havoc.” And public protests erupted in the streets as D.C. braces for a confrontation over who really controls policing in the nation’s capital.
