VP Vance Roasts Democrats Amid Government Shutdown

The government shutdown has Americans asking, “What now?” Vice President JD Vance went on Fox News Wednesday to deliver a blunt assessment, calling it the “Schumer Shutdown” and criticizing Democrats for blocking a clean funding bill passed by Republicans. Vance stressed that policy disagreements should not halt essential services like the military, air traffic control, or food benefits.

He pointed out that Democrats’ demands—including $1.5 trillion in new spending, extending COVID-era programs, and taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants—are politically unwise and unrelated to immediate government needs. Vance highlighted that even programs like Obamacare’s premium support don’t expire until next year, making the shutdown over them unnecessary.

On the topic of illegal-immigrant healthcare, Vance criticized Biden-era policies that provided benefits to non-citizens, noting that Trump-era measures had already reversed such funding. He described Democrats’ push to reinstate these benefits as both absurd and disrespectful to taxpayers.

Vance argued that the real motivation behind the shutdown is political: Democrats’ opposition to Donald Trump. Their strategy, he said, focuses on maintaining power, even at the expense of good governance. By appealing to controversial constituencies and counting on artificial census boosts, Democrats aim to cling to congressional seats they might otherwise lose. In Vance’s view, the party’s survival instinct drives their actions more than rational policy, and their low approval ratings make them a “dangerous” force in Washington. The message: this shutdown is about politics, not governing.
