\u201cWhat the hell did you do?\u201d he shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I blinked slowly.
\u201cGood morning, Mike.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He pointed toward his driveway. I stepped outside, pretending to look confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Right behind his car sat my trash bins<\/strong> \u2014 neatly lined up, directly where his tires always cut across my lawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Except this time, they were filled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not with household trash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With frozen, solid, soaking-wet snow and ice<\/strong> I\u2019d packed in the night before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Heavy. Immovable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One bin was cracked. Another had dented his bumper. And a third had dumped icy slush all over his driveway and under his car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I crossed my arms. He opened his mouth, then closed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I continued, still calm. He yelled, \u201cYou can\u2019t just put your trash there!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n I tilted my head. His face turned purple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd,\u201d I added, \u201cI have security cameras now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n That part was true. Cheap ones, but enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI have footage of your car driving over my lawn every trash day for the last month. Knocking over my bins. Spreading garbage where my kids play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI was going to file a complaint,\u201d I said. \u201cMaybe with the city. Maybe with your insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n His shoulders dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I smiled \u2014 not sweetly, not angrily. Just tired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI want my lawn left alone. My bins untouched. And if I ever have to clean up your mess again, I won\u2019t be standing at your door.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n He nodded once. Since that day?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not a single tire track. \u201cYou know, I\u2019ve been cleaning up garbage off my lawn for weeks. Thought maybe you were confused about where your driveway ends and my yard begins.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat\u2019s funny. Because trash pickup rules say bins go near the road. Exactly where I put them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not a tipped bin.
