It wasn\u2019t ideal, but Mom\u2019s been forgetting things more lately, and Dad\u2019s got that slow shuffle now\u2014like his body\u2019s dissolving in pieces. So yeah, maybe it made sense at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, it was little stuff. A few slices of bread gone here, a missing banana, a spoon in the sink when no one should\u2019ve used it. I thought maybe Mom was snacking and forgetting. Then entire meals started vanishing\u2014leftovers I cooked for them before heading to work, just gone.But neither of them remembered eating anything. Or they pretended not to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I asked gently at first. Then not-so-gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mom would just smile, kind of glassy-eyed. \u201cOh, I don\u2019t think I touched it, dear.\u201d Dad would wave me off. \u201cYou always had an appetite.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It got weird fast. One day I found my name crossed off a takeout receipt. Another time, I came home and the front door was locked from the inside\u2014but they both swore they\u2019d been napping upstairs the whole time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So last week, I did something I\u2019m not proud of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I installed a motion sensor in the hallway, right outside the pantry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three nights ago, it went off at 1:42 a.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I moved back in six months ago, after the divorce.
